Photographer: Nick Knight
Although a photographer of many subjects, Nick Knight's associations with and relevance in the fashion world cannot be denied. From avant-guard designers and editorial publications, to top models and big-brand advertisers, Knight has lensed the most respected names in fashion. His photography alone is strong and striking, but I most adore the images he manipulates with various additional media. In fact part of what I love is in the inability to even identify how and with what he has added to the original photo, and where one ends and the other begins. The result is breathtaking imagery that straddles the line between photography, painting, and collage. ♥
Artist: Allison Renshaw
After seeing some of my latest collage work, my darling mother (also an artist!) suggested I check out southern California's Allison Renshaw. Color is one of the first elements that draws me to anything - food, clothes, home decor, wildlife- and super-extra-especially art. So of course it took no time at all to decide that I was interested in Renshaw's work. But, what hooked me is the complex world she creates and draws the viewer into- invigorating, terrifying, thrilling- that you can't quite decide if you want to live within, or run away from as fast as you possibly can. Elements of street art and surrealism, the mix of rich depths with cartoonishly simple flat shapes, the seeming chaos- or is it harmony?- makes for the kind of art that can be looked at repeatedly without loosing its emotionally evocative power.
