Us big babies over here in California have busted out our down parkas and turnt up our seat heaters, cause sweet lawd it dropped below SIXTY DEGREES!!! I'm as bad- if not worse- as anyone, currently sitting indoors, heat on... with a beanie on my noggin. But, if we're being real, us southern coastal critters have it darn pretty good, and as such I think it's only fair we do our part and not succumb to the temptation to cover ourselves in wool sweatsuits and hibernate on a diet of hot cocoa and chicken noodle soup. Thus, I present to you, layering so you're warm enough, without eliciting looks of "are you effing kidding me?" from visitors who hail from the land of actual winter.
Scarf? Keep it lightweight.
Jacket? Try layering an unbuttoned shirtdress.
Pants? Nah. Just throw some socks under your booties.
If you frequent any of the highly curated craft and design fairs along the coast of California, you have undoubtedly laid eyes on the bright, beautiful scarves and homewares that are Block Shop Textiles. Whether you're familiar with the brand, or learning about it for the first time, I'm certain you'll enjoy hearing from the sweet and smiley sisters behind the designs, Hopie and Lily, in their honest, informative (and hysterical!) interview. I hung out with them in their downtown LA studio, while friend and fab photog, Collin Erie, captured the duo hard at work producing prettiness.
Read on to hear about how they got their start, their design process, and keeping it all together as the artists, businesswomen, and sisters behind a rapidly growing and beloved brand.
Every blog and its motha has a holiday shopping list...so HOW do I still have a whole list of people to shop for?!?! Hot dang. You too? Though I may have failed myself, I have totally got you, girlfrand.
Block Shop scarves (and pillows!) are a one-size-fits-all ticket to anyone's heart. Designed by two sisters in LA; hand block printed in India; and goddam CUTE for you, me, mom, sis, BFF, BF, bro, AND Fido.
This week I'll be showing the many ways I like to wear 'em, AND I'll be featuring an interview with sisters Hopie and Lily, so you know all about the process, design, and heart n soul stuffed inside each beauteous scarfarilo.
So check back all week, and start yer bums shoppin! The countdown is on.....♥
For a full range of Holiday-festive flair that is sure to sleigh, shop my looks below! And be sure to check out all the ways I wear it here!
OK, so I've been avoiding HOLIDAY head-on, opting instead for festive alternatives like pink with camo, or a sexy sparkly number that feels like snuggie (don't be jelly!). But sometimes, ya just feel like embracing the holiday spirit as boldly and as literally as your local mall. This, my darlings, would be that outfit. Just shut yer peppermint-bark crunching, champagne guzzling trap long enough to throw on all the red and plaid that ya got, top it off with some kick-ass kicks, and girlfriend you are GOOD TO GO.
My friends and I have grown rather (perhaps overly?) fond of what we refer to as a "cheating outfit," or "sweatpants for adults." You know the kind: it looks age appropriate, tasteful- stylish even!- but it feels like you climbed into a wad of your softest blanket, or a sack made of your favorite sweats. (See here, here and here. Like I said, perhaps overly fond).
Somehow, this dress - in all its titty-bearing, thigh-high-slit, sexy, sparkly, splendor- fully qualifies as a cheating outfit. #thumbsupemoji. And because it's green and sparkly, it's an obvious choice for holiday parties... parties at which you can now comfortably camp out by the cheese plate without having to unbutton your pants. (Don't act like you don't do dat, girl). Throw it on with these Killer heels from Aminah Abdul Jillil, and you are a holiday waiting to happen. ♥
I met Aminah when she was dancing alongside Britney Spears on the 2011 Femme Fatale Tour. I was assisting designer Zaldy on the costumes for Britney, as well as styling for her 14 back up dancers, which allowed me to work closely with Aminah for nearly 2 months. So I know first hand - in addition to being a total babe and calm, sensitive sweetheart - this girl can DANCE.
Amazingly, this is just one of her many talents, and I interviewed her not about her super successful career as a dancer, but about her insanely gorg (and comfy!) footwear collection, Aminah Abdul Jillil.
Head here to check out the interview with the designer!
When we think of holiday dressing, red, gold, sparkles and shine often come to mind. But if you start with fun, fab footzies, you can ditch the norms and still look totally festive! This week, I'll be posting my interview with professional dancer and super talented footwear designer, Aminah Abdul Jillil, accompanied by a range of looks that work for all your holiday parties, featuring her gorgeous collection. My first look relies on these super cute (and comfy!!) flats, bronze hardware details, and a flirty peek of skin to achieve a holiday-worthy look that will set you apart from the black, red, gold, and glittery crowd.
Check back all week for more holiday looks, and an intimate peek inside super-sweet and multi-talented Aminah's life as a dancer and designer!
